October is Dysautonomia Awareness month. I wanted to do a post to raise awareness so I thought I’d share with you all five fast facts about Dysautonomia.
- Dysauto what? Dis-oughta’-know-me-uh. For those of you who have never heard of it, Dysautonomia is the medical term for a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS)or autonomic dysfunction.
- Dysautonomia can impact many different organs, resulting in many different symptoms and can impact the whole body. Think about all of the things your ANS is responsible for. Breathing, regulating heart rate, regulating body temperature, going to the toilet. the list goes on.
- Symptoms may include tachycardia, bradycardia, hypotension or hypertension, dizzy spells, orthostatic intolerance (symptoms which occur when standing up), inability to regulate body temperature , nausea, vomiting, incontinence, a dry mouth, dry eyes and even brain fog.
- There are many different types of Dysautonomia including ; Neaurally Mediated Hypotension(NMH), Neurocardiogenic Syncope (NCS), Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Orthostatic Intolerance (OI), MSA (Mu;tiple System Atrophy), Familial Dysautonomia (FD), Autoimmune Autonomic Ganglionopathy (AAG) and Pandysautonomia (Pandys).
- The international awareness colour for Dysautonomia is turquoise.
If you haven’t read my previous post from last year on how you can show your support people living with Dysautonomia and help raise awareness you can read it here.
How you can support people living with Dysautonomia and help raise awareness
I would love it if every one of you who reads this post takes a step towards raising awareness by wearing a turquoise coloured ribbon and sharing these posts on social media.
This is one condition that I have never heard of , going to check it out. 🙂

Wow, I’ve just looked it up, how interesting! Would you believe that I am waiting to see a haematologist to check for secondary polycythemia and PRV
Which sounds very similar in symptoms 😳

Oh No. I think symptom wise many chronic conditions overlap but I’m not sure what you mean by similar in symptoms. It depends what type of Dysautonomia you have but of course there is primary Dysautonomia and secondary Dysautonomia. I mainly have cardiac symptoms and fainting.

Thank you. I am so happy that at least I was able to spread awareness and educate two more people on the condition because that was my aim and I am hoping to see as many people wearing turquoise for me this month. You might want to read my previous post https://coolncreative.wordpress.com/2017/10/ on how you can raise awareness. Like many chronic conditions there is currently no cure and researchers compare the disability seen in POTS ( A form of Dysautonomia) to the disability seen in conditions like COPD and congestive heart failure.

Looked up briefly about this and read through your page. Scary symptoms and alot are the same as many auto immune disorders. It seems there are more and more conditions with no real known cause and treatment is to treat symptoms, no cure. I have a few auto immune disorders myself just want to say its nice to see another blogger doing and sharing what they like, trying not to let health stop them. And thank you for educating us about your disorder.

Yes the symptoms can be scary but unfortunately the doctors don’t seem to understand and because it’s not life threatening very little research is conducted in this area when it has a huge impact on quality of life. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment and I am glad I was able to educate you on Dysautonomia. It is my aim to see as many people wearing the colour turquoise this month to help spread the word and raise awareness. You might want to read my previous blog which I have linked in this post on ways to show your support and raise awareness. It is terrifying that there are more and more conditions which there are no cures for let alone treatments. I understand what it must be like to live with autoimmune conditions too as I live with multiple conditions and it is good to see that you too don’t focus on your illness and instead blog about what you love.
