How to play Monopoly Deal

Picture 20

Today is World Monopoly Day and to celebrate I thought I’d share with you how to play Monopoly Deal.

Some of you may have heard about Monopoly Deal, which is the card game version of the traditional Monopoly board game.  It comes in a little red box like the picture above, which is easy to carry around and there are some awesome action cards. And it’s super fast, much quicker than the board game which can be never ending.

It may seem challenging at first but once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s heaps of fun. If you’ve never seen it or played it before here’s how the game goes.

The game begins by removing the quick play instruction cards from the pack, shuffling the cards and then dealing out five cards to each player.  The remaining cards are placed face down in the centre to form the draw pile. On each player’s turn they pick up two cards from the draw pile.   During the game each player can only have seven cards in their hands at a time and if they have more than seven at the end of their turn, they must discard the extra cards by placing them in the pile next to the draw pile. On your turn, you can play up to three cards from your pile by either placing them down next to the draw pile, placing them in your bank, if they’re money cards or if they’re properties placing them out on the table in front of you to create your sets.  You can choose to play all three, one or two cards or no cards at all. The first player to have three complete sets is the winner J. For each colour property or things which you own, the card has on it how many cards of that particular set you need to make a complete set.  For example, the water company only needs two cards to complete the set, whereas for the railway stations you need four cards to complete the set.

There are a number of action cards including pass go; where you get to pick up two cards from the draw pile, debt collector, where you force a selected player to pay you the amount it says on the card, just say no, which you can put down if a player asks you to pay them rent or forces you to pay them something, (and then you don’t have to pay), it’s my birthday, yah J, where every player has to pay you a certain amount(I think it’s 1M) and rent, where you select a player to pay you the amount that your property card says.

It still has houses and hotels like the original game, which you can put on your properties once you have a complete set if you have these cards.  The difference between this game and the original Monopoly board game is that if you have specific cards such as debt collector, forced deal or sly deal, you can be mean and steal other player’s properties to complete your set and you can only pay players with either the money you’ve put down in the bank or otherwise you’re forced to give them the properties which you own to that value.

There’s nothing better than sitting down and playing a relaxing, but sometimes intense game of Monopoly Deal.  It’s an awesome game.

That’s about all I have to tell you about the game. Want to know more, then just post your comments or questions on the bottom of this blog, otherwise you’ll have to check it out for yourself to see what this is all about, and join in the fun. 🙂
